Genre: Melodramatic Popular Song/Twee/Hardcore

Label: Best Before Records

Currently garnering love from just about everyone with a keyboard and a mouth. Johnny Foreigner are the UK’s “new favourite band“. That is rubbish. The lead singers voice is gonna grate for some. Its a lot less annoying than that dude from Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. But conditioned by a year of listening to Los Campesinos! I actually quite like it. In fact Los Campesinos! is a good comparison. These guys sound like they did a Nirvana, by stealing the Pixies loud quite style, but not just using it dynamically. They actually change genres two. These guys schizophrenically switch between Hardcore a semi-skimmed Black Flags affair to a Belle and Sebastian/Los Campesinos twee boy girl harmonies. It’s an utterly gripping listen.

Two bands from Brooklyn. Two great songs. Both of these guys albums having been popping up on endless “Best of…” lists. Don’t let that jade your opinion of them though.

Les Savy Fav

Genre: Indie/Experimental/Rock

Label: French Kiss Records

I remember this video coming out. If anything I got a bit distracted by the hypnotic dancing lady, and actually didn’t notice how good this song is. Nothing has made me want to boogie more this year. Just those drums matching up with that groovy bass line, its delicious. The melody has been stuck in my head for 3 days. In fact I know its in the key of G major its been in my head so much. Enjoy.

Les Savy Fav- Patty Lee

Remember to buy there album so they can afford to shave.

[MP3] Les Savy Fav- Patty Lee [highly highly recommended]

Myspace: Les Savy Fav are sad as The National have more friends

The National

Genre: Indie/Rock/Alternative

Label: Beggars Banquet

Obviously as a blogger Its not like I missed these guys. I just didn’t hear anything good, that was worth me researching further and buying the album. I wish I had, beneath a layer of hyperbole and guff is this utter gem. Dark and brooding, its the deep breathing crooning on this song that make it worth it.

The National- Mistaken For Strangers

Buy The Nationals album so they can fix their bed.

Is an anticlimax.

With only three proper videos.

British Sea Power

Genre: Alternative Rock/Indie

Label: Rough Trade Records

British Sea Power- Waving Flags

This video is as mysterious as Yans face. Hot or not? He’s like a male Lily Allen.

Actually I found this while getting that video.

British Sea Power- Atom [fan video]

Fantastic and actually makes more sense than BSP’s own video. I think a lot can be said for a record that makes a toddler want to run around endlessly in a circle. Namely that its good enough to download.

[MP3] British Sea Power- Atom [highly recommended]

Ooh looky a video released a few weeks ago that no one noticed. I claim this as a premier!

British Sea Power- Water Tower

That’s off the Krakenhaus? EP that I’m still waiting for! Bloody post! Good mind.

Why don’t you buy the EP from a reputable company, allowing the band to buy some more foliage.

Myspace: Massive cult band. Thus actually tiny

Website: www.britishseapower.co.uk

Los Campesinos

Genre: Alternative/Indie/Pop

Label: Wichita Recordings

Many have argued for this to be the greatest video of the year. Its difficult to spot a flaw in their case. Kittens, confetti, multicolour throwup?

Los Campesinos- Death to Los Campesinos

Others hate it though. Stereogum fans went a bit ape poopy and got all moody as they hadn’t had dose of LCD Soundsystem that day. Its a bit early for a backlash; they’ve only played a few gigs over the pond. Browsing their blog a I found a fairly entertaining blog mainly updated by the lovely bassist and the fit ginger one.

Previously. They where also great at ULU a yonk ago, now buy their excellent EP so the band can afford a new xylophone.
[MP3] Los Campesinos- Death to Los Campesinos

Myspace: Actually as popular as British Sea Power despite having existed for 10 mins

Website: www.loscampesinos.com

Members of the Public

Genre: Pop

Label: Shifty Disco

Members of the Public- Magic Ingredient

Not bad, but they’re best song is Extraordinary pleasures. Which is actually quite new, off their unreleased album. I would do an MP3 rip off myspace but audacity has borked. So your gonna have to go through the strenuous process of clicking a big link.

You can help them buy more sunglasses by buying the single. Capitalism is fun.

Myspace: They’re myspace is quite broken and a horrible green

P.S I know I promised Johnny Foreigner and Stricken City, but I finish college on Monday and I won’t have a fire breathing monster down my neck.

Genre: Alternative/Pop/Amazingness

Label: LL Recordings

Putting her name into elbo.ws you quickly realise this girl has just exploded. Not literally that would be a messy shame. No after one or two Swedish blogs giving the nods over the summer, and then slowly more US blogs caught on, things have heated up for this Swedish songstress after brooklyn vegan reviewed a gig she did with fellow catchy Swedes Peter, Bjorn and John. He post so much of course he’s going to post something gold up occasionally.

Then things went really nuclear, when Stereogum mentioned her in passing. This made me feel really bad as I more or less ignore when they post now as loads of it is PR hype and drivel. Thus I only took note when goodweatherforairstrikes went ape poopy about her. Why?

Lykke Li- Little Bit

That’s kids is several shades of brilliant and beyond. Pop perfection with utterly bewitching lyrics. Forget everything I’ve said before. This is the single of the year. It has everything, cow bells, triangles, ooh oohs, ukuleles, and a vocal that makes you want to kiss girls. Just note the almost stutter in just before second chorus. Amazing. I actually almost cried when I found out she supported Caribou and the Dirty Projectors in November, a gig I already felt bad about not going to through laziness and ignorance.

MP3: Lykke Li- Little Bit [highly highly recommended]

MP3: Lykke Li- Everybody But Me

Buy her limited edition E.P and feel enormously cool

I came really late to this part once again. Its over really. Anyway my interest in St Vincent was piqued by two of my favourite bloggers own interests. Mainly this video. But on further inspection was a bit bored by the songs on myspace. But

I only went to this gig, as mainly I like the venue and had an urge for some grilled chicken. On record I hadn’t really got with her. It came off as pretencions and dull. But live its another beast. St Vincent get your attention by rocking up all her songs. Often generating music that has the complexity of Sufjan Stevens before breaking it down into a shoegazy galatic noise opera. Her pedal board and guitar playing is also offensively good. Made me want to give up. Here’s a video, but you will only fall in love with her. Not in music. You need to hunt her down outside of a studio.

St Vincent- Jesus Saves, I spend

I think they missed a trick not marketing this as a Christmas song. A strange anti commercialisation of Christmas of song. Its what I would want to here anyway.

Buy her album, so she can buy another kajillion pedals.

And also visist her very interesting blog.

Myspace: St Vincent is one of the best marketed indie music stars this year, don’t add her she will break your heart

Ida Maria-Oh My God November 27, 2007

Genre: Indie/Rock/Punk

Label: Nesna Records

Strolling along, I see this party, its basically over. Condoms and syringes are strewn around the poorly maintained gardens. An ugg booted girl is throwing up in a hedge while a fugly boy holds back her hair in desperate hope of getting some tail later.

But I here this song. A song so good, it makes my week. I want to eat to it, I want to sleep to it, I want to drink to it, I will lose my mind to it. This is Ida Maria. A girl and her band making amazing pop music (not surprisingly from Sweden Norway!) that sounds like the Pixies having fun. They’ve supported Good Shoes but don’t let that taint your opinion off them. Actually that’s harsh. What I mean is they sound nothing like really.

Ida Maria- Oh My God

Smashing. I can’t claim this as a discovery really. Nialler9 was where I heard it from, but the cheeky git from MyOldKentuckyBlog had his ear to the ground and picked this out during CMJ in the states. Even The Guardian got there before me. Luckily this video came out 4 days ago, and no ones noticed so I’ll claim the video. Yay me. I’m so desperate.

MP3: Ida Maria-Oh My God [highly recommended]

MP3: Ida Maria- Louie

Mp3: Ida Maria- Going To Hell

Of course. Ida Marie need your money to afford herring to build up a layer of fat to get through the cold summer months in Sweden. So go to iTunes or buy “OMG” on hand numbered 7inch. I did as not only is something worth keeping, but I reckon could be a good investment, as we should be hearing a lot more from her in the future. Just today she did something for MTV and has an XFM live Session with John Kennedy in January. She also runs her own label (that Nesna one) which makes her even more cool. A possible hope for a Swedish Arts and Crafts?

Shout out for our friend at ishooktheroyalthrone.com who has now strings together a series of songs on Goldsmith’s Uni Internet radio station Wired. I’ve been listening to this as I write and its definitely worth keeping an eye on to here his interview with British Sea Power. Competing with Colin Murray he is playing some very interesting stuff, and honestly has been some of the best music radio I’ve heard in a while. Join his face.

Once again I’ve turned up to the party a little late on this one. The Octopus Project are a 4 piece instrumental outfit that formed 7 years ago. Very fun instrumental pop music they do make. Even Pitchfork likes them. Regarde.

The Octopus Project- Truck

That children is the sound of an instant classic. Keyboards jar against crashing guitar and smashing cymbal. It makes me want to jump up and down like a Masai warrior, or a 8 year old at a school disco hyped up on lemonade and party rings.

These are some slice cuts. You lucky pups can nick some more mp3 from The Octopus Project’s own website.

Buy their new album so the band can buy a new Casio keyboard.

Genre: Indie/Garage /Pop

Label: Memphis Industries

Hello, come to the front. Don’t be scared, its cold squeeze together. You can all hear me ok? Good. Welcome to my hopefully regular Sunday post. From my constant browsing of other peoples blogs, I have found bloggers seemingly observe the sabbath, with very few blogging. Thus as a raving atheist and Sunday being my only day off, means I can fill any gaping musical voids on this day of rest. So to start us off here is a very popular act who most people will have heard of (if your cool). Hopeless lackeys follow me.

Tokyo Police Club- Nature of the Experiment

Their first single. You can’t blame me for dismissing them as another Strokes wanna be. Its not bad and certainly contains always good boy girl harmonies and has an ability to cut loose in a way the Strokes never could.

MP3: Tokyo Police Club- Nature of the Experiment [recommended]

Tokyo Police Club- Cheer It On

Now they started working it. An ace video for a great pop song. Plus I found out they where Canadian. So they must be good. Also fantastic intro. That’s a declaration for world domination if I ever heard it.

MP3: Tokyo Police Club- Cheer It On [highly recommended]

Tokyo Police Club-Your English Good

MP3: Tokyo Police Club- Your English Is Good

My favourite song by them so far. On evidence I saw from them performing at Reading (which I never reviewed, my bad) they are definitely a singles band. And they really have cracked 3 of the best singles of the year. Effortlessly catchy, whilst not being shallow or corny is really hard to do. The production is really slick on this one to, so frigin’ bouncy its like a musical equivalent of a trampoline, but you know with notes, and hihats.

Tokyo Police Club- Citizens of Tomorrow

And this is the latest single of the new EP, which kinda apparently covers stuff from the first EP (which is actually really long and could be a small album), as they couldn’t be bothered to make an album. Its seems kinda silly, but its nice to see a band that despite having the hype isn’t rushing into the studio to record an album they’re not ready to do. This songs actually does show that they do downbeat to. Lovely dystopian video guys.

Now watch them make breakfast.

You now know everything about this band. Except their names, which are quite forgettable.

May ask you if you know the pedal that the guitarist uses, please tell me, I want one. And also any good free hot linking hosters, as I’ve realised, I’m using up my bandwidth very quickly. I’ll post some more obscure stuff later.

Now buy this so that band can afford shoes. Its also great for Xmas parties! Or as a suggestion to a little brotehr or sister.

Or get the new EP of itunes.

Myspace: Tokyo Police Club are very very popular, sorry about not keeping up

I MUST FINISH THIS SERIES!

Bishop Allen

Apart from the time when I had previously heard

this song, when I first decided actually I like thisand thought “hmm… I’ll put this on the portable sound file jukebox”. This song really came to my attention when I was travelling home from Reading on the train having been herded into first class, as the coach class was packed with commuters and surplus muddy revellers. A rather twee intro of just a single arpeggic ukulele gives way to a slightly breathy male vocal before being accompanied by sparing use of a glockenspiel. When drums finally join you are mid way into this decided catchy pop gem. Glockenspiel ukulele cross over band! WAH! I think my brain is melting. Seriously though it’s lovely, and probably unbeatable as an indie pop song about wedding photography. Warning girls it may cause your ovaries to explode. In a good way.

A little break in our laid back tunes and instead a barrage of noise to remind its Sunday and Jesus loves you!

Pterodactyl- Polio

I think for a self directed music video by a punk band, the tale of this runaway wheel is pretty cute! (probably don’t wanna hang around on that youtube related to channel though). But the track (found on the ever amazing TuneaDay by pete) really is super awesome. Frantic drumming permeates the whole song, while a tremolo guitar line prevents the song getting too bogged down in overused 5th chords like most punk bands. The bassists apparently pounds out one single note while a mental singer shrieks “woo hee hoo” in falsetto. Polio should not work in anyway, but it does so so well. It turns out sounding like Be Your Own PET! have stolen Battles and glued their feet to the floor as the walls close in around them like in indie Indiana Jones (the old kind not the new one that gonna be horrible).
Vice say it much better though:-

“It’s like Deerhoof without an epileptic Japanese pygmy vocalist and with more scuzz. I know that it sounds like it wouldn’t work but this is great to put on when you’re in a bad mood and want to be in an even work one.” -Vice Magazine

See. It sadly ends as quickly as it starts clocking in under 2 and a half minutes, which is probably it’s greatest flaw.

Pterodactyl consist of Kurt Beals on bass, Joe Kremer on guitar and Matt Marlin on a probably damaged drum kit (note this). They’ve been around since 2004 and actually performed loads of gigs in the US. I commend them for their DIY spirit, not having singles; instead making a video for a song you can get free of their website. They probably like dinosaurs.
