Someone has transcribed them here. But they were wrong. Thanks NikNak.

When You Were Young

brandon flowers

You said bearing your heartache
Waiting on some beautiful boy to
To save you from your old ways
You play forgiveness
Watch me now, here he comes

He doesn’t look a thing like Jesus
But he talks like a gentleman
Like you imagine when you were young

Can we climb this mountain I don’t know
High enough then ever before her
No, we can make it if we take it slow
Let’s take it easy, easy now, watch it go

We’re burning down the highway skyline
Back on a hurricane that started turning
When you were young
When you were young

And sometimes you close your eyes
and see a place where you used to live
When you were young

They say the devils water it ain’t so sweet
You don’t have to drink right now
But you can tip your feet
Every once and a little while

You said bearing your heartache
Waiting on some beautiful boy to
To save you from your old ways
You play forgiveness
Watch me now, here he comes

He doesn’t look a thing like Jesus
But he talks like a gentleman
Like you imagine when you were young

(he talks like a gentleman
Like you imagine) when you were young

I said
He doesn’t look a thing like Jesus
He doesn’t look a thing like Jesus

But more than you’ll ever know

Lots of metaphor’s I’m see. Brandon’s not likely to win an Ivor Novello is he. Honestly who the hell do you know who looks like jesus?

slightly wrong- these are the actual ones

You sit there in your heartache
Waiting on some beautiful boy to
To save you from your old ways
You play forgiveness
Watch him now, here he come

He doesn’t look a thing like Jesus
But he talks like a gentleman
Like you imagined when you were young

Can we climb this mountain I don’t know
Higher now than ever before I
Know we can make it if we take it slow
Let’s take it easy, easy now, watch it go

We’re burning down the highway skyline
On the back of a hurricane that started turning
When you were young
When you were young

And sometimes you close your eyes
and see the place where you used to live
When you were young

They say the devils water it ain’t so sweet
You don’t have to drink right now
But you can dip your feet
Every once in a little while

You sit there in your heartache
Waiting on some beautiful boy to
To save you from your old ways
You play forgiveness
Watch him now, here he come

He doesn’t look a thing like Jesus
But he talks like a gentleman
Like you imagined when you were young

(Talks like a gentleman
Like you imagined when) when you were young

I said he doesn’t look a thing like Jesus
He doesn’t look a thing like Jesus

But more than you’ll ever know

9. bus7 - July 25, 2006

Johnny Damon used to look like Jesus until he signed with the Yankees. What does that tell you about the Yankees?

Great tune, by the way, even though it sounds like a mashup of about 15 other songs. Listen to this in your car and try not driving 100+ mph.

10. shia - July 26, 2006

16. Alyssa - July 27, 2006

I don’t think they literally mean “look like Jesus” I think it’s more that he isn’t perfect like Jesus not physically. Maybe that’s just me.

I heart the Killers and am soooo happy they got a second cd out there. It’s about time, boys.

this song is so original! it’s cute and for some reason makes me tear up. if for some reason you read this brandon…shave your mustache you were cuter with long hair and without it…the earlier days..

26. miss mary mack - July 31, 2006

we’re burning down the highway skyline on the hurricane that started turning i’m typing along with the song

OH MAN OH MAN OH MAN ALIVE THIS SONG = PERFECTION

and i’m not some crazed fan, either. i heard it on the radio and started ROCKING. like mad.

27. Jesus - August 1, 2006

I dont get it.

28. Mery - August 1, 2006

OMG they’re SO GOOD.

29. Fan - August 1, 2006

For all you young fans out there who claim this is such an “original song”??… go listen to Bruce Springsteen’s Born to Run, this song is a direct rip-off of the sound, song structure, and lyric treatments.

Good song, yes, but it severely lacks originality. Learn your musical history before making these comments!

30. melanie - August 1, 2006

this song is awesome!!!!!
it’s the best ever!!!!!!!!
i really love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

31. alyssa24 - August 2, 2006

I love their new song…rockin’ fun!!!

“HE DOESN’T LOOK A THING LIKE JESUS
BUT HE TALKS LIKE A GENTLEMAN…”

WOOOOO! Sam’s Town, here we come!

34. zero - August 2, 2006

if i love the killers with hot fuss, with sams town im gonna crazy the are the best of the music i cant wait more for sams town

35. CC - August 2, 2006

When I listened to this song for the first time the last thing on my mind when I heard Brandons voice was “originality” “song structure”, and “lyric treatments”. I don’t have a degree in “music history”, I switch a song on and if it puts a smile on my face and gets me tapping my feet and humming for the rest of the day then its good enough to play over and over, AND I can certainly say listening to The Killers singing this new song put plenty of smiles on my face and had me singing along…great for the spirit
I LUVVVVVV it “he doesn’t look a thing like jesus” im still going

36. jilmen - August 4, 2006

HELL YEAH THIS SONG IS OG. AND WAT THE FUCK “Bruce Springsteen’s Born to Run” is in no way similar to “when you were young” so i recommend to all the haters of the Killers to get the fuck out.. u rejects..

37. Dave Yates - August 4, 2006

Oh my God….I’ve missed the Killers so much this has just put one huge smile on my face!

What a ace song, can’t wait for the album!

38. Maria - August 4, 2006

“WE’RE RIDING ON THE BACK OF A HURRICANE, THAT STARTED TURNING, WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG..”

I can’t wait for Sam’s Town! It’s going to be even better than Hot Fuss. Im literally counting down the days until their new album comes out. The Killers are the most amazing band ever.

39. JOE - August 4, 2006

44. I have a name? - August 5, 2006

I rekon he DOES look like Jesus

45. I have a name? - August 5, 2006

Hey do you guys rekon Brandon is gay or bisexual.

46. JIM WATT - August 5, 2006

I’m an old guitarist in a scots rock band. sick of the tired old classic rock thing. killers got through to me coupla years ago. they’ve got somethin special.I try to tell other musos my age, to give respect to bands like this, who are keepin new rock alive, an fresh. I heard this song last week, it stirred me up, an flew me back to my teens. so what, if there is a slight nod to springsteens earlier flavour of young free spirit. everythings influenced by everythin else. this music is healthy, and a welcome change from other recent attitude-laden, inyourface, stuff. HURRY UP SAM. WERE ALL WAITIN.

47. Holly - August 5, 2006

Hey, do any of you people know the meaning of this song? I think it has quite a catchy tune! I’m a Christian and I was just curious of the meaning of the song because of: He doesn’t look a thing like Jesus……they say the Devil’s water ain’t so sweet … etc. Please don’t mock me if you might because I’m a Christian but God loves you, Jesus came into the world to save us from our sins.
God bless xx
Holly

48. CPJ - August 5, 2006

No one’s discussed the “interference” that’s overlaid in the song, which I think is one of it’s most interesting aspects. There’s almost two songs going on, or at least the hint of a second song. I’ve got no music degree, but I’ve noted the first couple of seconds, if that, in the song almost sound like a Black Sabbath (again not well versed in that tradition) or hard core metal sound/song, and then it almost switches lanes, kicks back into gear and becomes the song itself. It’s actually fascinating to me. In addition, there’s that distorted voice that repeats the same phrase at the very beginning and throughout the song. Damned if I can make it out. The best I can come up with is a phrase using similar vowels, like “kick rock” (I dare not say Kidrock – clearly not what’s being said, but sounds like that). Can anyone enlighten me? What’s being said there? Anything?

49. kayteeee - August 6, 2006

the killers are like sex…only better

maybe that’s why SPIN mag. called them the band of the year

this song is soo amazing, and so is brandon flowers 🙂
soooo i def. can’t wait for oct. 3rd. and in my opinion it isn’t coming fast enough.

wow

the killers rock my soul

50. Somthing - August 7, 2006

The phrase that is repeated im pretty sure is k rock, or kroq the radio station.

51. Stephanie - August 8, 2006

I am in love with Brandon – and this song is pure musical genius! U jus gotta love The Killers!!!!

52. fergie wilson - August 8, 2006

oh my days that song has to be the best song this year. the killers are great and should keep on rocking. as much as i loved hot fuss this album must have to match the standards of there famous smile like you mean it, mr brightside and somebody told me by having a;ll the songs perfect just like when you were young. i think the lyrics are avout a young girl who finds this boy and likes him possibly thinks he loves her but he doesnt have the qualities of jesus but appears to be a gentleman. I think that basically means that he isnt like jesus but he acts like a gentleman when really he isnt and she was young and made a mistake if anyone disagrees send me a shout out to ferguswilson007@hotmail.com. Long live the killers.

53. Aviram, Israel - August 9, 2006

Awesome song.

54. plasticinemag - August 13, 2006

Hello from Spain.
Before all, thanks for the lyrics.
I think The killers want to be a great band but the can’t.
Sounds epic and be presuntuous (uf, sorry for my english) I think is no the way to be an emotional good band.
This song is …umm….a correct single but i don’t understand what want they say with this lyrics.
Is the Killers a rock Christian band? jejejej

I think there are bands much better now like Duels (a great new album)

I feel fine to discover your blog..I am working in mine (a wordpress blog in spanish….But I can’t live without universal music & culture).
I gonna read you all the days I can.
Thanks for your attention.
Regards.

Please, listen to this band in “myspace”
And tell me what is your oppinion (of course isn’t my band or my family, jejje)
Bye!!!

55. IR - August 13, 2006

God I hate it when superfical wannabe musicians that think they are the upmost autority on all music finds simiarities in a song with other songs then knocks the song. DUH!!! of course you will hear similar songs in all music…..Get over it The Killers are very original and this song is very well put together. The title of this song is When You Were Young not Born To Run. Nobody cares about Bruce on this post. Keep on doing what your doing Killers!!!! You rock.

56. Ben - August 15, 2006

Awesome song, these guys are da BOMB!!!

No, we can make it if we take it slow…Ahh perfect.

57. Yong Hwee - August 15, 2006

I don’t think The Killers are that good.. Just okay..

58. Jess - August 15, 2006

Firstly, i think The Killers are amazing. They are the perfection of Indie Rock n Roll. I also love When You Were Young.

However, i really do see a resemblance with Bruce Springsteen’s ‘Born To Run’.

I don’t think some of you should just insult people who write comments that go beyond ‘WOW I LOVE THE KILLERS. I HEART BRANDON.’

What’s wrong with discussing The Killers’ influences? It makes a blog like this far more interesting.

And ‘IR’, you are very wrong when you call people ‘superfical wannabe musicians’. They ARE musicians because they try to look past a catchy tune and a good looking singer.

From a pianist (who has not yet failed), and a Killers fan.
Jessica, – London.

59. Nick - August 16, 2006

The Killers did say in an interview that they wanted to make songs like Bruce Springsteen for the new album. They felt like he had an ablility to rock out an arena that their music didn’t have. Basically, they wanted to stop being a “dance band.”

Personally, I can somewhat see a resemblance between this song and Born to Run, but I think it’s being blown out of proportion (unlike the Dani California/Mary Jane’s Last Dance thing).

60. EADEN - August 18, 2006

LOVE THE KILLERS ESSPEACIALLY BRANDON!!!!

61. snipedout99 - August 18, 2006

I actually dont like any of the new Killers songs. The old ones are great though.

Visit my site please… http://snipedout99.wordpress.com/

62. Cal - August 18, 2006

Hi guys, I think this song is great (like all the other Killers song of course)
Anyway, I agree with fergie wilson’s idea of the lyrics with the young girl who finds this boy and likes him but i think it’s more like he isn’t perfect or holy like Jesus but he is still quite gentalmanly (if thats a word) which is pretty much what she thought her ideal man would be like when she was young and she knows he isn’t exactly Mr Right and maybe evan a bit wild and/or dangerous but she’s still really tempted to talk to him/ask him out because she thinks he is her the man she needs to brighten up her life and ‘save her from her old ways’.
So (if that made any sense at all) that’s my basic idea of the song.
Thanks!

63. .[You Play Forgiveness]. - August 19, 2006

Hey Everyone,

I have just seen the video exclusive on Channel 4 to this song. It is the first time I have both seen the video and heard the song. I must say that I really, really like it!
They have matured a lot with regards to both their tune and their lyrics.
To be honest, who cares about what they sound like; that has no relevence when it comes to how a song like that makes you feel. It is powerful and emotional. I am definatly looking forward to their ‘Sam’s Town’ album, coming out on October 2nd!
[I just bloody hope they do some more touring around the UK!!]

Well Done, Brandon & Co.

From an appriciative music fan,
Pete x

64. Abby - August 19, 2006

ROCK ON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THEY ARE THE MOST AWESOME BAND THAT EVER WALK THE EARTH!!!! THEY’RE JUST TOO GREAT!! SUPERB

65. Michelle - August 22, 2006

I started to listen to this song & I’m going through something right now in the same situation & I think there saying that he seemed perfect in the beginning like Jesus is “perfect” but then something happened & she had a heartache ’cause he was a gentlemen like I imagaine when I was young, but it’s going too fast and we can make it if we take it slow… guys are assholes that’s all I got to say.. I get this song & it’s on my space http://www.myspace.com/ladymichellew

66. keeton - August 23, 2006

67. Mike - August 24, 2006

Hey Michelle, a GUY wrote the song… goon.

This song is ridiculously good

72. Evita - August 29, 2006

Hey everyone! I didn’t know there were so many KILLERS fans!! I am the most DIE HARD KILLERS fan!! I love them. I waited 2 weeks for the Ticket sales and i was the first person to get tickets to their live concert in MSG!! I’m so excited. I”m so happy to know all of you love the killers like I do. I didn’t think there were other die hard Fans like me! I hope to talk to some of you guys one day. I absolutly love EVERY song off of Hot Fuss, I love the other tracks that were not release and I love this New song!!

73. Eddy S - August 30, 2006

I’m with Jim Watt….I’m also a huge Sprinsteen fan (best concert ever, fall of ’81 in San Diego…3.5 hours of rocking) and also a tad older than the usual Killers demograhic (will be 60 in a few weeks), but this song is great, as is the band. Whenever a deejay mentions a Killers cut is on the way, I’m buzzed. But it’s bands like this that keep rock alive. LONG LIVE ROCK!!!!!!!! AND LONG LIVE THE KILLERS!!!!!!!!!!

74. collegehangover - August 31, 2006

The Killers admitted that they were going to sound like Bruce Springsteen… its only the fans that are saying this song is “so original”. It is a great song and I love it, but the Killers themselves never once claimed that it was the most original sounding thing you will have ever heard, so lay off them. Appreciate this song for what it is… a great song that sounds different than anything else on the radio at this time. http://www.collegehangover.com

75. Karmakillers - August 31, 2006

the killers are so awsome!!!!

78. Crambo - September 3, 2006

Heard ‘When You Were Young’ just last night on MTV, kinda recognized the tune, zif i’d heard it briefly before(maybe on radio). Couldn’t believe it when I saw it was the Killers. Got it on repeat now on iTunes. Gets better every time. I’m not some sicko but I think the melody warms your heart and the lyrics make the hairs on my neck stand up. I liked them before, always annoying my wife by constantly playing ‘Hot Fuss’ but now I have to see them live. Next time they’re in Scotland! I’m there!

79. ryan - September 5, 2006

brilliant, i’m seeing them in denver oct 15! all but 3 venues are sold out for the first part of the tour!

80. Nichelle - September 5, 2006

I absolutly adore this song since i first heard it!! I just get such a conection from it!

81. Brittany - September 10, 2006

This band rocks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!This song is one ther best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Also brandon looks hotttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt performing it he is the hottist man ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

82. breanna and mace - September 13, 2006

i don’t neccesarilly think that — heres what i think but i could be wrong- its about a young girl who is stuck with a guy that she does bad stuff with and she kind of regrets. hence the phrase “you don’t have to drink right now” but then a new guy comes along and symbollically he is lyk jesus becuz he is about to turn her life around for the good he doesnt look lyk jesus but he talks lyk a gentleman. but they want the girl to know that she can still” dip her feet every once in a while” but ya she makes it work with the guy even though its hard to change her old ways ” can we climb this mountain? i dont kno higher now than ever before” but this new guy is lyk a dream a guy she imagined for herself WHEN SHE WAS YOUNG

83. spaz - September 14, 2006

The taste of love a can be deadly in every way…this song is fuckin awsome… the song can drive u up a wall an down the other side

88. Efron Callan - September 19, 2006

Yeah Lyka’s right it’s such an awesum video! And the Killers are always in the back (or front) of my mind LOL!

89. GR - September 19, 2006

The Killers are great, love Hot Fuss and now “when you were young”, who cares if is similar to “Burn to run”, every song has the influence of other songs and thats OK, we are talking about one big world of music and feelings mixed in our hearth and soul ….hope they visit Mexico soon!

90. killzoeclark - September 20, 2006

Great song, and great lyrics… but don’t you think they sound a little like Bruce Springsteen when he used to sing Thunder Road or Born to Run?

91. Filbisuter - September 20, 2006

I like the Killers a lot, and also like Bruce Springsteen. I do too find this song very similar to “Born to Run” Although there’s nothing wrong for a band to have some musical influences, and that does not qualify as not being original. Still, don’t forget that Bruce is “the boss” and “born to run” was pointed out to be the greatest rock song of all times. The killers might be the new bosses and rock audiences like the classics did. Good song!

92. MV540 - September 20, 2006

The songs is great! the lyrics are all about predetermined parameters that we create in our minds about our ideals and the common life we desire; is about the deception we feel when we don’t accomplish those parameters and the internal struggle between what can be real and what we believe it should be real, in the decisions we make… anyway, great song!!! i luv it!

93. marissa - September 20, 2006

THE SONG IS GREAT! can’t wait for sam’s town!love it love it!

94. beatrice - September 21, 2006

this is incredible

95. melisa - September 21, 2006

i loooooooooooooooooooooooove you you rock and the songs is greaaaaaaaaat i sing it every day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

96. Kailey - September 22, 2006

i love this song!!!!!!! The Killers are Bitchin!!

97. siouxee - September 22, 2006

i was in a sporty car when i first heard this song on the radio, and soon i was going almost 100 mph – this song really rocked!…and now that i’ve read the lyrics, it seems that the song’s about a boy [the singer is, after all, a grown-up boy] with a religious upbringing [that’s why he spent time “when you were young” imagining what Jesus looks like] who feels a lot of internal strife [“the devil’s water it ain’t so sweet”] because he has a crush on another boy [“you said bearing your heartache/ waiting on some beautiful boy”]…and while he fears that his crush on this boy makes him a fraud [“playing at forgiveness”] in his search for Jesus [“to save from you from your old ways”], he’s not really sure he cares [“you can dip your feet every once in a while”], or if he does, what to do about it [“he doesn’t look a thing like Jesus/ but more than you’ll ever know”]….in any case, the guitar, vocals, and phrasing on this song really rock. thanks for posting the lyrics.

98. Bods - September 22, 2006

Entry #29 Fan… just because you think it sounds like something does not give you the right to accuse the rest of us as musically ignorant. I don’t think they sound all that much alike… and I can play both on guitar, so shut yer yap you pretentious twit.

Great tune btw… real drive to it

99. Eliana - September 23, 2006

OMG!!!! live this song

115. x_oh-so-glamourous - October 3, 2006

dude the lyrics are rong… god u could at least get it right it goes :

You sit there in your heartache
Waiting on some beautiful boy to
To save you from your old ways
You play forgiveness
Watch it now … here he comes!

He doesn’t look a thing like Jesus
But he talks like a gentleman
Like you imagined when you were young

Can we climb this mountain
I don’t know
Higher now than ever before
I know we can make it if we take it slow
Let’s take it easy
Easy now, watch it go

We’re burning down the highway skyline
On the back of a hurricane that started turning
When you were young
When you were young

And sometimes you close your eyes
and see the place where you used to live
When you were young

They say the devil’s water, it ain’t so sweet
You don’t have to drink right now
But you can dip your feet
Every once in a little while

You sit there in your heartache
Waiting on some beautiful boy to
To save you from your old ways
You play forgiveness
Watch it now here he comes

He doesn’t look a thing like Jesus
But he talks like a gentleman
Like you imagined when you were young
(He talks like a gentlemen, like you imagined when)
When you were young

I said he doesn’t look a thing like Jesus
He doesn’t look a thing like Jesus
But more than you’ll ever know

116. TANYA - October 3, 2006

THIS SONG IS THE SHIT!…I LOVE IT!…AND THE LEAD SINGER IS HOT!…HE IS ONE FINE PIECE OF ASS!

117. TANYA IS HOT!!!!!! - October 3, 2006

I’M HUNGRY!!!!….AND I LOVE YOU GUYS!
=]

118. buttered noodles - October 5, 2006

can nobady figure out what this song is about. its about how shallow people can be. You sit there in your heartache
Waiting on some BEAUTIFUL BOY TO SAVE YOU FROM YOUR OLD WAYS.
You play forgiveness
Watch it now … here he comes!

HE DOESN’T LOOK A THING LIKE JESUS
BUT HE TALKS LIKE A GENTLEMAN
Like you imagined when you were young
SO HERE IT IS, THE GUY SHE MARRIED IS PHYSICALLY APPEALING BUT TREATS HER LIKE CRAP ( the scene where he was having sex with another woman). and the gentleman (the guy running up the hill) clearly not the best looking person a little old and run down, but talks to her like a gentleman or treats her right. come on ppl get it together.

119. jamieford - October 5, 2006

Wow…guitar riffs sound like Big Country from the 80s. Nice throwback. I love it.

120. laura - October 6, 2006

i luv this band there just soooooo gud!!!!

121. Layla - October 7, 2006

i lave this band its so not fair my mom gets to go to cali to see them and im stuck in west virginia wit my granny……………………

122. Layla - October 7, 2006

i ment LOVE people not LAVE MY BAD SO SORRY!!!!!!!

123. Bones - October 7, 2006

ok i dont know if i’m correct but i think the guy in the beginning running up the hill) is the same guy throughout the video.

I think it about the good girl who thinks she can change the bad guy. She gets involve with him even though she knows he’s nothing like Jesus, but because he talks like a gentleman, apart of what she imagined when she was young (like they say good girl usually like bad guys) and now she is involve/married he keeps proving more and more to be nothing like Jesus and she keeps forgiving him (playing forgiveness) each time he come (watch me now, here he comes) and now there back where they started off (back on the hurricane…) trying to make it work like they use to… before everything happen (can we ever climb this mountain… than ever before her) and this is what she is struggling with he’s never changing for the better, and she keeps taking him back knowing this… (But you can tip your feet Every once and a little while)

But i thinkit’s more than that, i think the gurl he cheated with just symbolizes the stuggle she has with him, and the main gurl can go for both girls and guys. and the marriage just symbolizes the engagment in that kind of situaiton. and i also think it’s kind of a rebellious song where he’s rebelling against the fact that people even bother to try to reach for something that seems impossible to reach…

but i don know for sure. i just watched the video today. lol. i could be completely of track. lol

124. omar - October 8, 2006

this is one of the best song ever !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

125. Kaelin - October 9, 2006

..I love singing to this song.

126. MLE - October 9, 2006

I think its about a girl who is settling for less than what she deserves.

“Waiting on some beautiful boy to save you from your old ways”

I think the Jesus thing refers to the “Saving” part. “He doesn’t look a thing like Jesus” meaning he isn’t the one thats gonna “save” her but she’s gonna settle for him anyways.

127. aaron - October 9, 2006

this song makes me think about when i was young and restless…things are so much easier as a kid……..

136. looky what we have here - October 19, 2006

maybe the part of “u can dip ur feet every once in a little while” has a sort of diabolical meaning. i mean come one, it aint so sweet but u dont have to drink right now its tempting the person to commit sin and such. who do these artist seek for guidance? mediums, fortune tellers and such? this was true with elvis and the beatles and there IS evidence for this.

137. carly - October 24, 2006

the video shows of him like sleepign with another girl. how come NOBODY picked up on this?? the devils water it aint so sweet is a metaphor for like the grass is greener on the other side..it means like when a guy cheats on a girl its not all its cracked up to be…she ends up going back to him…which i dont udnerstand..unless the girl he slept with was a prostitue or something…’he doesnt look a thing like jesus’ because she is christian and she clearly respects her religion because she marries him ..and im not quite sure if she sleeps with him bc it cuts straight to him cheating on her with the picture of them together right near the bed.[ps..the water could also mean forgiveness and absolution because it has many christian meanings of ‘washing away ones sins’ ]

the beginning of the video is llike really the middle, if you watch thier clothes. its because hes frantically looking for her because hes worried bc h e just cheated on her. [shes wearing the white dress] she questions her faith on the hill because she thought he was a gentleman…shes crying if you notice…its because her whole life just fell apart with something she had..soemone who she trusted–..the husbands freaking out beceause hes worried about her..by the time he hugs her and the song ACTUALLY starts they move backward to show you why she was so upset

you see how that same day shes coming home from church and before that they got married and as you keep going back in the video when they show how he cheated on her they keep going back in time to thier ewedding day and thier party and stuff

‘he doesnt look a thing like jesus’ ‘but more than youll ever know….’ also means like he doesnt look a thing like jesus because he cheated on her…he could never be that perfect man–but more than you’ll ever know [brandon puts his hand on his heart] meaning that its so much more than that..hes so much more than what just happened, and it happeend and it was a mistake but he knew what he did wrong and he made it right with his wife

thats like my long, drawn out point of view
i think its really important to watch a video and see what the artist is trying to say….videos like these are clearly meant to be stories like movies to watch and really undertsand the song

if you actually read this and have agreements/disagreements..send me an email!
–carly

138. steve - October 27, 2006

I’m 58 years old and I love that “when you were young song” by the “Killers’ I like “date rape” by Sublime too I Like some of Bruces ballads. Musically they’re good. The lyrics are interesting. I like some of the new disco sounding stuff. ( 102.7 -103.5) nyc. 101.1 played the Killers and Sublime and have a great acoustic Sunrise on Sundays.

139. steve - October 27, 2006

These songs are all musically good. A lot of people don’t havae a wide range of musical tastes. And no two people have the same musical tastes. Some people are so ego-centric when it comes to music I have to get away from them to listen to the Killers or Sublime.

140. Brittanyy pardy - October 28, 2006

i think this song is so amazing, it really makes me think about what happend in my life, it is defenely the best song this band has.i love it,thanks guys, loves you all , brittanyy , xo * 🙂

141. Longnez - October 29, 2006

143. be b - November 5, 2006

OH YEAH..OH YEAH…COOLEST ONE!!!!!!

144. Kristin - November 8, 2006

I’ve seen them live twice in the past month…can’t wait to go again next month. They were great at Virgin Festival in Maryland, they played a lot of songs from “Sams Town” before it was on the radio and I was really impressed, but they made the mistake of playing right before “The Who” and “Red Hot Chili Peppers” because those two bands are absolutely amazing live and have been around much longer. Many people don’t realize that the best songs made by the Killers from “Hot Fuss” weren’t even played on the radio…everyone who hasn’t already should listen to the entire c.d. “When You Were Young” is extremely ambiguous. I agree that it is a song that you have to warm up to, then grow to love. One great thing about music like this is that everyone can visualize it how they see it, and it affects them differently. Everyone’s opinions are important. I personally feel that the song is about a girl who has had severe relationship problems. Then another boy wants to be with her (the boy she visualizes as saving her from her old ways-her old ways being messing around with loser guys), except he still isn’t the picture perfect person she saw herself with as a child. He has an edge to him, (the devil’s water it ain’t so sweet)…but she needs to settle for him (you can dip your feet) because he is the closest thing she is going to find to what she wanted.

145. casey - November 12, 2006

152. Danny Wood - November 20, 2006

You know what all you guys are retarted………………. if you want to listen to this shit you can but my god this stuff sucks and hey dushbags the video is juts a video there is no religion behind it other than the religion of them making money for the video if you want to listen to some good ass music i recommned Lil wayne “army Guns”

153. Patrick - November 20, 2006

The killers.

It is about a girl who has done alot of stupid things in her life, and shes looking for that guy to come for her, to help her out of her problems, he isnt perfect but what she had imagined since she was young, he doesnt look a thing like Jesus, but more than she ever would know, he turns out to be a gentle man and the right thing for her, he understands her and takes everything slow trying to get her out of the criminal problems, probably she had stolen money and needs to pay it back “Can we climb this mountain” i think it means they are trying to get togheter, they are trying togheter to get everything back on the normal and start a new life togheter just reset everything. She couldnt see Jesus so she had only come in contact with the devil so she would never end up in heaven.

My meaning of the song , i really like the lyric its so nice , i feel so right when i listen to the song.

mail me if you think i have misunderstod the lyric 🙂

i love this song its awsome the killers KICK ASS!!!

155. Dainty - December 14, 2006

I saw this video on MTV. It caught my attention. I actually really felt it for the girls character. I’m more of a hip hop/reggae/r&b type of girl but I liked the song, the video, the sound, the lyrics everything. Not bad.

156. LokiClock - December 15, 2006

The overlayed vocal bit is K-ROCK’s “watermark” (if you will). It’s an Austin radio station (Though there are apparently many K-ROCKs, I recognize the DJs voice). At the end of the full recording, it has this little bit where the DJ announces the title and artist.

For those confused about the line “He doesn’t look a thing like Jesus”, it means he doesn’t look like what a good person, theoretically, should look like.

Not a bad song, but full of cliche.

157. BILLY THE KID - December 16, 2006

WHAT IS THE REAL MESSAGE AFTER ALL, SOMEONE WHO CAN TELL ME HA HA….!!!!

158. PJ - January 10, 2007

I agree with all of what u guys! d song is great!
but okay here’s d thing about d lyrics..
does it really matter who cheated on whom?
she is not perfect (your old ways; you play forgiveness) and she was expecting to find this perfect guy (like u imagined when u were young) only to realise.. that there is no such thing as d perfect guy (he doesn’t look a thing like Jesus). hell nobody’s perfect right?! its a harsh reality so she escapes to ‘a place where u used to live when u were young’ and remembers her innocence….

And they both realise that ‘d devil’s water it aint so sweet’. and together they wonder ‘can we climb this mountain i don’t know’…
so they compromise ‘you can dip your feet every once in a little while’…
the storyline ends with them back together right? so they work it out.. good for them!
Cheers!

159. Mizz Mary Mack Mack Mack - January 30, 2007

I’ve read the blogs about the lyrics and I agree with Bones. I just love the fact that the lyrics are ambiguous and can take on so many different meanings for different people…even with the video to try and sort it out for the people “who just HAVE to know what the song means…”… My favorite line is “Waiting for some beautiful boy to SAVE YOU FROM YOUR OLD WAYS….” There’s a lot of people, who as they grow older, become “trapped” by who they are “programmed” to be by society, their family, the church, etc…breaking free with some FUN guy (who’s nothing like Jesus!) is an awesome escape…from a trapped life…but the woman only risks “getting her feet wet” every once in awhile…cause he’s not her “perfect man” (like who society, her parents, the church, expect her to marry) and she knows it won’t work out…but she wants to escape, and every once in a while she braves it….(this version has nothing to do with the video…the lyrics are open to interpretation…but I still like Bones’ take!

160. nina - June 24, 2007

I love this song, its just awesome esp the video. the killers are the best band ever.

jamieford – ICAM

First, I freaking flove this song! It makes me want to cry every time – there’s something sooooo bittersweet and ‘heartachy’ about it – a kind of melancholy and wistfulness you get when you think of your awkward self in high school (that’s just me). And the vid – that girl, whoever she is, makes me want to cry every time I see her walking down that street, a complete emotional mess. But yes! The riffs in this song bring back those soaring feelings that I always got when I listened to a Big Country song (and *not* just “In A Big Country” – that band kicked ass, btw). I really liked Hot Fuss, but this is definitely an evolution in the right direction.

165. Jay - March 29, 2008

“48. CPJ – August 5, 2006

Anything?”

LOL!
CPJ, there is no brilliant interference going on. You just downloaded the most popular limewire version, recorded from KROQ radio station which is apparently obsessed with advertising their name.

166. Stix - May 18, 2008

Re 29, I am a huge Bruce fan, and can say with all honesty that no one else’s music has moved me the way his does – Until the Killers came along. Obviously I do like other music but not in the same way. I love The Killers sound and I’ve said before that the killers music reminds me of Springsteen but the only similarity I see (or hear) is the dynamism and passion. It feels like home. Can’t say I would compare this specifically to Born to Run at all.

Like someone else said, influences are good.

I have discovered that charges for on-line degree gurus tend to be a terrific value. For example a full Bachelors Degree in Communication in the University of Phoenix Online consists of 60 credits at $515/credit or $30,900. Also American Intercontinental University Online makes available Bachelors of Business Administration with a whole school element of 180 units and a tuition fee of $30,560. Online learning has made getting your college diploma been so cool because you could earn your current degree in the comfort of your house and when you finish from work. Thanks for all other tips I’ve learned from your blog.
